When the soft tissue inside your tooth (the pulp) becomes infected it needs to be removed before an abscess can form. Left untreated, an abscess can cause you to lose your tooth or can cause other serious problems. To prevent this from happening and to save the tooth, a root canal is performed by an endodontist.
When we perform a root canal we give you a local anesthetic to numb the area, and then we make an opening in the tooth to reach the pulp. We remove the pulp with special tools and then clean out the area (the canal) inside your tooth. After we finish cleaning the canal we seal the hole with a permanent filling.
Once the root canal is completed your tooth can be restored with a crown if necessary.
